3 voices certainly, yet this debut CD from the Fiona Burnett Trio is very much the sum of its parts. Featuring soprano saxophonist Fiona Burnett, double bassist Ben Robertson and drummer David Jones. This release follows Burnett's critically acclaimed quartet recordings Racer (2000) and Venus Rising (1999), also released on Newmarket Music. A collaboration of considerable skill and experience, this trio was convened in 1999 as another avenue for the leader's musical expression and features original compositions from the leader, plus My Favourite Things, brought to the jazz canon by John Coltrane and the title track 3 Voices, a collective composition by the trio. 3 Voices - is just that. Three unique musicians. Three unique improvisers. Three unique creative voices. An inventive approach to jazz, which is fresh, spontaneous and original. "The opening ambient strains of this album are an excellent indicator of the balance between creativity and technical precision that is a feature of '3 Voices'.
Burnett and company lead the listener on a fascinating musical voyage that never fails to intrigue and delight. The ensemble is always secure and engages in some subtle interplay and dialogue.
"The compositions are mature and reflect a diverse range of musical experience that has been absorbed into Burnett's style, creating a unique and truly important voice in Australian jazz. This disc should be sought out by lovers of precise, articulate and communicative jazz ensemble playing as well as lovers of the saxophone. It is a fine opus that speaks volumes for the direction of original Australian jazz." -David Sudmalis, Music Forum.
"The passion and beauty of Melbourne soprano saxophonist Fiona Burnett's music, always evident in her performances and recordings, rises to new heights on this marvellous album. By pursuing the sparser accompaniment of just bass and drums...Burnett has found greater space and uses it superbly. Here are three voices joined as one." -Kenny Weir, Sunday Herald Sun.
"burning, intense, astoundingly virtuosic soprano saxophonist Fiona Burnett." -John Clare, Sydney Morning Herald.
