Heavily inbued with New York downtown sensibilities, it marks the debut on the Australian jazz recording scene of an exciting and individual trumpet voice - Paul Williamson. His quintet features equally outstanding players, saxman Anton Delecca, trombonist Jordan Murray, bassist Matt Clohesy and drummer Danny Fischer.
This is an excellent debut CD, distinguished by strong performances from all and a very impressive and interesting collection of original compositions, all intelligently and tightly arranged by Williamson.
"Bloody brilliant. One of the 10 best jazz CDs of 2001." Kenny Weir, Sunday Herald Sun.
"This is one of the best Australian jazz recordings of recent years. Paul Williamson is quite an impressive and dynamic player. His writing too, is articulate and well conceived - full of fascinating detail and surprise. Teamed with compelling and very simpatico players - this is an absorbing and highly personalised CD. Great tunes, smart charts and hot playing." Gerry Koster, PBS-FM.
"A striking debut for local horn-player Paul Williamson. It's not the exciting an unusual trumpet sound on this release that grabs the attention. The tight and intelligent arrangements clinch it. Williamson's originals are like contemporary tone poems, confronting, edgy and tense. But he can still maintain a powerful swing even when the line moves way outside the chord and beat to create a rich dissonance. Layers of composition and streams of narrative run deep with shades of Ellington and Mingus. Another key is the fascinating interaction. The different voices move in and out but the dynamics are kept under perfect control." ***1/2 Leon Gettler, The Age.
