Allan Brown, Barry Duggan & Gary Costello - L' Etranger

Album Description

Alto saxophonist Barry Duggan is one of the unsung heroes of Australian jazz. He has a distinctly personal language and sound, developed over decades of performance around the world. To this most challenging format, two of Australia's most respected musicians bring their wealth of experience - bassist Gary Costello and drummer Allan Browne. Here the three interact seamlessly, developing a beautiful rapport as they combine their own compositions with two by Thelonious Monk, and Wayne Shorter's ESP. Their playing is of the highest order and this recording is a masterful representation of modern jazz.

"Barry Duggan has recorded before now, but this disc is the first one to make clear just how masterful a jazz musician he is. His sound on the alto is entirely personal - the odd passage might remind you of Lee Konitz or even (Bernie) McGann but ultimately, no one else sounds quite like this. His thought processes are no less individual. Again, a Konitz comparison comes to mind because Duggan here displays a similar courage, a similar dogged determination to avoid cliche as he shapes the phrases that make up each solo." Leon Getter, The Age.
